News from Gwenth

Ah, gosh.. Is it 20xx with you?

I bet Gwenthia was started somewhere in 2004 or 2005, so we're about 16 years in! However time moves so much slower, and so it's been but a few moons.. [:-}]

The site is fairly robust, but no changes since 2012 basically..

Sadly gwenthia dot org has been seized, copied and use by malware scum, so avoid

Ellys Confederacy (1)

This, the largest navlacht of Gara-Dien, is a vibrant mix of the fierce Lyshian nomads (sworn enemies to the Zharaan across the border in Zathuria), the Bee People of the Honeyed Coast and lowlands and the Chav-Chin tribe of the hills (the guardians of the sacred mountain from which Gara’Dien is said to have departed this plane at the behest of the Lady of Doors?). The Lyshian nomads willingly raid the neighbours across the border for slaves, in support of ancient custom and defiance of Imperial Policy. The ownership of the Charrux-Ellys River delta, also known as the Great Sudeg Marsh, has been contested for centuries. However the ever watchful presence of the Black Angels, the so called Charioteers of the Zathurians is enough to prevent direct military action.

I hope this tweak is okay? See the notes about the Tharux attitudes to the Gara-Dien invasion of this region Zathuria Cultural Response. What remains of the Fazal people? Are they actually the Chav-Chin? Is is a name now forgotten or perhaps a minority sub-group? The Zathurians allowed them to be captured, why? Lets work on this. Also take into account that I have maps showing Zathurian Way Markers dotted throughout this area. Who are the Lyshian enslaving? The Zharaan would rather die than be slaves, is it the southern cities? I beleive that war is immanent in this region Cheers Simon

Primacy of Throseka (2)

“The cradle of Gara-Dien”, Throseka is separated from Ellys by the Viorxe river and dominated by the capital city of Moorvia. Beyond the cosmopolitan city, and its extensively irrigated croplands and orchards, the small settlements of the Tuoeka people dot the scrublands, while still paying their traditional homage to the Fifthros nomads (a group closely related to the Lyshian and sharing many traditions and customs). Intermingled among the Tuoeka peoples are small communities of Tharux, descended from roving traders and, by and large, apparently ignorant of their relation to their kin further north.

Nb All Tharux serve the Zathurians to an extent, even if they don't know it or want to. More will be revealed in time.

Iorxiland (3)

Spanning the upper reaches of the Viorxe River are the tribes of the Iorxi Confederacy, a small, widely-distributed tribal grouping whose guardian spirits were defeated in a magical contest by the theurgy of Gara’Dien. While the rule of the Harmonious Empire may have changed their faith perspective somewhat and the educated Iorxi recognise the importance of balance, their traditional way of life has remained largely unchanged. (And heavy-handed attempts to do so have led to bloody protests…) Most of their agricultural practices emphasis the burning of tree cover to create the fertile ash which enriches the soil – something of this “destruction to bring fertility and life” ethic seems to have shaped their penal and authority systems!

Amnuzan Junta (4)

This damaged land (where most magic seems to be reduced in power and effect) is ruled by the Chamnu, a taciturn and war-like society holding power over a semi-nomadic mongrel population (the admixture of local Mniäd, Tuoeka, Fifthros and Tharux bloodlines). This was the area most affected by the Plains Wars and still bears the scars. The Chamnu, who are not an ethnic group so much as a meritocratic warrior elite, are fanatic Gara-Dien loyalists renowned for their bravery. They await the day that the Emperor will order them to swarm across the Ellys River and burn the Zathurian city of Demna to the ground, a day which many expect to be imminent. The navlacht's eastern border is marked by the River Sifthros, the west by the Aenthkiang River.

Tyath County (5)

The Tyath controlled the Greater Tyath Magistracy before they joined the Empire (by choice) and the Magistrates still wield impressive day-to-day power, even if the area of land they control has been reduced somewhat. The Tyath formerly held sway over the Bee People of Ellys, and the two navlacht now enjoy far better relations than they ever did in pre-Imperial times.

Tiaen Hills Province (6)

The pygmy Mid-tai hill people simply wish to be left alone. One of the earliest nations to follow the way of Gara’Dien they are secretive and little-known, guarding their borders against all comers. It is whispered that they await the summons of the Theurge himself, when he returns to rule Gwenthia at the left hand of the Lady of Doors, and that only then will their mighty power be revealed. Any Mid-tai known beyond their land are either powerful sorcerers or bedraggled outcasts. Few who enter their lands return, although their headless corpses may be seen drifting down the river Aenthkiang into the Charrux/Ellys basin.

The Viridian (7)

For many years these lands were shunned by the tribes of Thurian, but now, with the coming of the Harmonious Empire these forested hills have been opened to settlement in the experiment which is The Viridian. Amidst the ancient ruins the landscape is being tamed and settled by colonists according to the wisdom of the Lady of Doors and the Theurgist Gara'Dien. Leaving behind their previous cultural identities the brightest and best are building The Viridian, and its shining capital Demegal.

All know that The Viridian is a triumph of the Jade Path, and it produces goods and agricultural produce of the highest order, yet it exports no particular items of artisitc or cultural merit. Its inhabitants, when met beyond the navlacht, seem contented and ealthy, but are otherwise totally unremarkable, except that is, for their devotion to the Lady of Doors.

Koijo Pact (8)

A land controlled by a number of City-Leagues, the most powerful of which is the City of Hako. This navlacht may well be one of the oldest existing governmental organisations in the region and harbours an intense suspicion of the Tharux. No one knows the origin of this, but certainly there were have never been any Tharuxi allowed within the walls of the City-States and the region escaped the horrors of the Night-Blind Plague, at least in part due to this policy.

The agricultural produce from the Pact is exported far and wide.

League of Jinnahn (10)

The adventuresome and wealthy Jinnahn are the mercantile adventurers par excellence of Gara-Dien. They have a centuries-long history of conflict with the neighbouring Sheshaan peoples, the origins of which are lost in myth. Since the coming of the Jade Empire this rivalry has been channelled into matters of trade and prestige, rather than of blood. Imperial Citizens from the League dominate Gara-Dien's trading endeavours with the rest of Gwenthia. Their ships are superior to all others in the Great Gara-Dien Bay (and far beyond), much to the chagrin of their neighbours.

Sheshaan Canonry (11)

The Sheshaan built their power on conquest and slavery, selling many such captives to their longtime allies, the Oxore. After centuries of such practices they were finally conquered by the Jade Empire by the forces raised by the Xunli general and convert ChentPin? after a hard fought campaign (146-158NC). The Sheshaan have since redirected some of their energies into a centuries-long fight for dominance with the neighbouring League of Jinnahn. They are at a serious low point in this contest at present. Membership of the Empire and the ways of the Lady of Doors have not completely outlawed slavery, but have seriously damaged the Sheshaan economy and confidence, and their large fleet is in poor condition. Worse still the recent spate of attacks on Sheshaan Slave ships is making matters worse...

Xunli Freehold (12)

Always thinly settled, the lands of the Xunli found new strength and identity after General ChentPin? was awarded the post of Imperial Governor of the newly-formed province after his succesful defeat of the neighbouring Sheshaan Canonry.
